Mmm guacamole.. Honestly, what’s better than super easy guac on a Taco Tuesday kind of night?
This guacamole can be customized to be super creamy (just mash the avocado more), or chunky (leave little chunks instead of mashing all the way through). AND it’ll only take you five minutes to make with 5 ingredients or less!
What’s in this guac?
Avocados!
Avocados just make me so happy. They are just so darn versatile. Need a dip? Nothing better than mixing some avocado in. Need something moisturizing for your face or hair? Avocado to the rescue.
It’s my all-time favorite healthy fat. And yes people, our bodies NEED healthy fats for so many things.
Aren’t fats bad for you?!
The short answer: not all of them. We convert healthy fats into energy that our bodies need. Not only are healthy fats good for your heart, according to The American Heart Association, they are also needed to help your body absorb certain nutrients and to protect organs. There are a plethora of reasons to include healthy fats in your diet, but it’s important to separate healthy from unhealthy fats.
Avocados are in the healthy fats category. They can even help keep your cholesterol levels in a healthy range.
I remember when people would only eat part of an avocado every couple days because they contained more calories and fat. This was while I was eating at least one full one a day.
Our bodies need different things, and mine (and most bodies!) definitely needs fats. Keep in mind, I was eating an avocado a day and still managed to lose weight every month while I was overweight because the rest of my food intake was also healthy. Feel free to check out my story if you’re new here =).
Back to the highlight of guac: the delectable, beautifully green fruit: avocado!
What makes avocados healthy?
Aside from avocados being my favorite healthy fat, they’re also a great source of vitamins and minerals like potassium, manganese, and many more. These babies are loaded with nutrients, especially fiber! Fiber is so necessary to keep your insides running smoothly.
Guac, baby, Guac!
I first fell in love with this fruit when I tried guacamole. I always thought it was some sort of guilty pleasure because nothing THAT delicious could be good for you!
Like many times in my life, I was wrong. Bear in mind that before I started on this health journey several years ago, the most I could do was bake cookies… I’m talking taking them out of the bag from the freezer, breaking them apart, and sticking them in the oven.
Yea.. That was the extent of it…
So when I started creating healthy substitutions for all my favorite foods, I took the time to look up the ingredients for guacamole.
Um.. That’s it? No really.. That cannot be it.
Oh, but it is.. As long as you’re not buying the brands that contain all sorts of acids and what not, which, most that I’ve found do.
So, of course, I started making my own.
You can make an excellent bowl of guacamole with as few as 5 ingredients in just 5 minutes!
Your base ingredients are going to be avocados, tomatoes, onions, lime or lemon juice, and salt (this is the only kind I use). I like adding black pepper and cilantro, but it totally depends on your taste.
Also, for my nightshade friends, I make this guacamole without tomatoes pretty often, and it’s still delicious! Same goes for anyone who can’t eat onions.
So how do you do it?
Start by picking the right kind of avocados. I usually buy a variety of fairly soft, between soft and hard, and a couple hard ones.
The softer ones are perfect for guac, the in between ones are great if you’re using them within the next couple days since they’ll be fairly soft by then, and the hard ones come in handy when you know you won’t be using them for a few days, but need them on hand just in case.
Texturally, the soft ones are just squishy enough. That means they don’t completely sink in when you grasp them.
Visually, they will be between a dark green to brown in color.
Once you have 4 of those, you’re good to go!
Mash all four avocados using a masher or fork until this consistency:
Mix in salt and pepper if using.
Add in lime/lemon juice, salt, onions, and tomatoes.
Mix well.
Add in cilantro pieces if using.
That’s it! You’ll have a delicious bowl of guacamole in no time!
- 4 ripe avocados
- 2 tablespoons lime or lemon juice
- ½ chopped onion
- 2 teaspoon (or more to taste) himalayan pink sea salt (or salt of choice)
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- Optional (but recommended):
- ⅓ cup chopped cilantro
- ½ ripe tomato or ~5 cherry tomatoes
- Cut avocados in half and remove the pits
- Either spoon out or squeeze avocado flesh into a large bowl
- Mash avocados using a fork or masher
- Stir in lime or lemon juice, onion, salt and pepper, and, if using, the optional ingredients- cilantro and tomatoes
- Taste and adjust if needed. Some days I add a bit more salt. On days when I'm feeling more zesty, I add in more lime juice.
Remember – This recipe can be modified or customized to your dietary needs/what you happen to have in your kitchen at the moment :). I’ve omitted everything but the lime, salt, and avocados and it still comes out great!
And there you have it! A super easy, delicious bowl of guac! Enjoy with tortilla chips, burritos, tacos, burrito bowls, and, if you’re like me, as a dressing on your salads 😉
